Prevalencia de Trastornos Mentales en relación con Experiencias Traumáticas por Violencia en adultos del departamento de Yoro, junio 2016

Abstract

The prevalence of mental disorders in relation to traumatic experiences due to violence was studied in adults of the department of Yoro. Two instruments were used: SRQ that allowed the screening of possible mental disorders and the Inventory of Traumatic Experiences of the Harvard Questionnaire that evaluates 16 types of traumas in the population that has been exposed to violent events. The population sample was 300 adults: 150 urban area and 150 rural area. The results indicated that 63% of the population presented symptoms of possible mental disorders, the most prevalent being: drug use, followed by depression and post-traumatic stress. In relation to sociodemographic variables, women and people residing in the urban area are the most affected. The traumatic experiences of violence have a significant impact on the mental health of the population, a greater number of violent events experienced, more symptomatology of mental disorders. It was found that political violence could be contributing to the development of depression and post-traumatic stress symptoms; physical violence was related whit the symptomatology of drug use and post-traumatic stress, finally in relation to sexual violence, it was found that could be contributing with the development of the symptoms of anxiety disorder.
