Factores Demográficos y Variables Psicosociales Asociadas al Riesgo Suicida en Estudiantes de la UNAH-CU durante la pandemia de la COVID-19 en el año 2020

Abstract

The present study aims to comprehensively and multidimensionally analyze demographic factors and psychosocial variables associated with suicidal risk among students of the National Autonomous University of Honduras at the University City during the year 2020, considering affective, cognitive, and behavioral aspects in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. The complexity of this phenomenon is intensified given the stage of life in which these young people find themselves, characterized by the hope and planning of a promising future. In this context, the study examines the relationship between demographic variables, the prevalence of depressive symptoms, levels of impulsivity, psychological well-being and perceived social support, as well as the relationship of these factors with suicidal risk, with special attention to the influence of COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health of students. The study is quantitative, cross-sectional and had a sample that consisted of 574 university students of Honduran nationality of both sexes, aged 18 years and older. The results demonstrated that age, sex, marital status, presence of disorders, impulsivity, perceived impact of the pandemic have no direct relationship with the suicide risk in students while employment status, spiritual beliefs, psychological well-being and social support perceived if they are related to suicidal risk. This study not only identifies critical areas of intervention, but also sheds light on the diversity of attitudes toward life among the student population, highlighting the importance of personalized and holistic approaches in suicide prevention.
